Undwerwater Welding Schools

There is actually such a thing as underwater welding schools, and in fact this is becoming one of those niche welding jobs that due to an aging infrastructure we need more and more recruits in yearly. Most curriculums at underwater welding school follow a similar curriculum instructing the prospective underwater welder in the things he must know in order to be safe and efficient at his job.

Most schools start with the diving portion of the classes before moving onto the welding. The fact of the matter is that underwater welding schools are training people to be involved in a very dangerous occupation. They must be certified commercial divers before any company would consider hiring them or a school would consider certifying them.  This is certification and knowledge beyond that of your standard SCUBA diver, and is necessary in order to weld underwater. A student would be trained in dive techniques and equipment as well as being educated on dive safety and the risks associated with commercial diving. Most schools will try to have as much practical time as possible once they feel the students have acquired the necessary safety knowledge to really give them the hands on time that they need.

The next step at underwater welding school would be to become educated about the actual techniques of welding underwater. The most frequently used method to weld under the water is referred to as shielded metal arc process. This allows them to learn to actually perform the welding as by this point they should be comfortable under the water.

The reason there is such a need for students to attend underwater welding schools is that our world’s metal infrastructure is aging rapidly. Many of the pipelines and bridges that were installed when those technologies were new are in dire need of repair, and so underwater welders are hired on a regular basis not only to repair them but also to test them to see how structurally sound they remain. Underwater welders are also recruited to work on the undersides of large ships on occasion.

A graduate from an underwater welding school can expect to make excellent income. As someone who is highly trained and in demand as long as they are available to work as often as possible they will be making a very high salary. This, in addition to the adventurous aspect of the work draws many young people to it as a career.

Underwater welding schools offer a unique opportunity to be a part of an exciting and unique career. The training is comprehensive and puts an emphasis on safety and quality work. The graduate from and underwater welding school is both very employable and is set up to earn a potentially very good income for some time in the future.
